the process by which words are divided into small meaningful units which can be referred to as free and bound morphemes. Under this topic we look at the word root, stem, prefix and suffix. The word root is the part of the word which remains after all the dervivational and inflectional morphemes are removed, for example the (teach) is the root of the word unteachable, (u) is the inflectional morphemes in this case called a prefix, it is considered an inflectional morpheme because when it is added to a word it doesn’t change the word’s word category, if you had a verb after added to it it will still be the verb unlike the derivational morpheme in this case (able). This morphemes is derivational because it has changed the word category of the word teach (verb) to an adverb teachable. Therefore, teachable is the stem of the word unteachable, with that we can conclude that the part of the word that remains when all the inflectional morphemes are removed is called the stem.
